The Reserves of Manchester United were looking to maintain their 12 game unbeaten run travelling to a Sunderland side not short of Premier League experience on a night where the weather caused havoc for all those involved at the game.
United’s line up saw no Ravel Morrison who we assume was injured during the Carling Cup game with Crystal Palace and no Larnell Cole or Zeki Fryers who both travelled to Switzerland with the first team squad. Paul Pogba was made captain and both Keane brothers also made the line up that included 7 defenders.
The league leaders got off to a great start when Vermijl opened the scoring with a great finish after a accurate ball from Fornaiser, however the reds were to concede two quick goals before half time, the first as Sunderland’s David Meyler scored at the second attempt and then the black cats took the lead when Craig Gardner’s free kick sailed in with the wind and left United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak flat footed.
Just after the restart, Sunderland made it 3-1 when Ryan Noble finished clinically after a mistake from Wooten, not long after it was 4-1, Noble grabbing his second of the night in similar circumstances.
However, in typical Manchester United fashion, the reds never gave up and after 58 minutes Michael Keane pulled one back for United after some lovely play from substitute John Cofie. Just after the hour mark, it was 4-3 as Will Keane grabbed his fourth goal in as many games to give United real hope of pulling off a sensational comeback.
Unfortunately, all hopes were dashed just seconds later as Noble secured his hat trick with a glancing header, United tried desperately to find a route back into the game but it was not to be, with just minutes left of normal time, Noble claimed his fourth goal of the night to make it 6-3 to Sunderland and finish off a pulsating game of football.
