David Gill: United are looking at one more signing

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has contradicted Sir Alex Ferguson and admitted the Premier League champions want to bring in one more player this summer.

Since arriving in America with the squad, Sir Alex Ferguson hasn’t been interviewed without answering a question regarding Paul Scholes’ replacement. However, Fergie has adopted a downbeat attitude letting the press know that the type of player we want isn’t available, so our summer spending may be coming to a close.

“We are not looking at the moment but we are looking at combinations of central midfielders now at the club,” Ferguson said earlier this week.

Maybe it was mind games from the 69-year-old, but thankfully David Gill came out today with an exclusive interview from MUTV (Manchester United television) and admitted the club are searching for one more player.

“We are looking at one more player to bring in,” he said.

Who could that “player” be? With Luka Modric wanting to sign for Chelsea and Samir Nasri heavily linked with a move to Manchester City, the only player that springs to mind is Wesley Sneijder, who has been mentioned regularly as a potential recruit. David Beckham had his say on the matter last weekend, after LA Galaxy lost to City on penalties.

David Gill also confirmed there are no discussions currently ongoing, as Ferguson has repeatedly told the press.

“There will still be 31 days of the transfer window to see if anything develops. The important point to understand, and Alex has made clear, is that we need someone who is going to improve the quality of the squad.

“We have a great squad and to get into that squad you need to be a world class player. If you can’t get the players you want, there is no point buying someone for the sake of it.

“But you never know. There is often movement in August.

“I am not saying I am working on anything specific because I’m not. But that situation could change quickly when we get back to Carrington.”

  1. Interesting Article.

I actually don’t think United have ever been after Sneijder or that Fergie has ever had him in mind. I think to be honest the whole Sneijder rumour mill has been a smokescreen. If you look at his stats and age it just doesn’t fit with what SAF has been doing with the club in all his years there. The M.O. as the super detective would say does not fit. I still think Nasri might be the possibility of the signing they’re after. I think SAF has been so insistent on denying any such rumours and the possibility of signing is to downplay that united are after him. You saw Wenger’s knee jerk reaction to the initial rumours that United and then shortly thereafter city were ‘interested’ in Nasri. Though I do think that City have the cash available I don’t think Nasri will go to them. I think given Wenger’s contempt towards Mancini’s recent comments he’ll be inclined not to let Nasri go to City. His recent comments though admitting that he may not be able to keep Nasri are also something to be considered. If say things come down to the wire as I suspect it will there’s a small but still distinct possibility that United who have calmed all the rumours of signing Nasri and almost erased them with the Sneijder smoke screen has been a very wise chess move from management. Meanwhile our noisy neighbours stir up the pot for us and ultimately we make a swoop at the last second to secure him. It is a possibility that occurs to me.

  3. I think Arsenal’s management want the money for Nasri and are unwilling to let him leave for Free. I have a feeling that if Nasri is given part of a choice in where he wants to go and if the price is right 20-30m the maximum they’ll get for him will be this summer. January the price goes down. Next summer he leaves for free. Arsenal if they’re going to lose a player would be wise to get something in return. Personally I think because of Nasri’s youth he’s the more valuable player than Sneijder anyhow. If he at the very least maintains the same form for the next 3 years his resale value will be better than say a Sneijder anyhow. For United’s cause he is the better signing long term. Which is more the smart type of dealing that Fergie seems to be so adept at making.
